About

“My aim is to put down on paper what I see and what I feel in the best and simplest way.”
― Ernest Hemingway

Welcome to A Cranky Woodsman, my little piece of the worldwide web.  I created this blog simply as an outlet for my writing.  Writing about the outdoors is something I love to do almost as much as actually being in the outdoors.

The blog will be a blend of stories…both true and not so true…gear talk, maybe some interviews and just my rambling in general.  I have a vast array of hobbies including kayak fishing, upland bird hunting, fly fishing, camping, backpacking, bushcrafting and much more but my lifelong passion has always been launching an arrow with stick and string. I’ve owned and shot a small number of both compounds, recurves, longbows and self-bows in my lifetime, but the flight of the arrow itself is what captivates me the most. Nonetheless, there should be a little bit here for everyone.

On a personal level, I sum myself up like this…God, my family and the outdoors.  In that order too.  I’ve been fishing since I was old enough to hold a rod and hunting since I was big enough to pull back a longbow string.  I love the tug of a fish on the end of a fly line and the flight of an arrow through the air.  I love the sunrise through the trees while sitting in the October woods, watching a bird dog working the aspens for grouse and I certainly can’t imagine life without the sound of migrating geese coming into decoys or the gobble of a tom turkey on a springtime morning.  I can’t think of anything about the outdoors that doesn’t cause my heart to speed up a little bit.  There’s just something about being in and interacting with God’s creations that fills my soul, and sharing those experiences with my family, friends and readers is icing on the cake. I get pretty cranky when I don’t get outdoors for a while, just ask my wife.

With that all being said, again, welcome to A Cranky Woodsman.  I hope you enjoy your time here as much as I enjoy sharing it with you.
